General Herbaceous and Damp Loving Plants (Perennials)

ACONITUM. ( Monkshoods) Spires of hooded flowers from late Spring to Autumn according to variety. Finely cut foliage is an added bonus for these woodland plants and make them ideal subjects for planting beside the shadier pond. - 'Ivorine' Ivory white flower in Jul/Aug. 5ft D - napellus anglicum. ACTAEA ( Cimicifuga) A group of very elegant and unusual plants for cool moist places. Tall and slender with ferny leaves, they extend the flowering season into Autumn with their bottle brushes of white or cream heavily scented flowers. - japonica. Here the leaves are less divided than in other species, the flower is pink tinged. 2 ½ ft. E - matsumurae. Tall and elegant with lovely white spires to 5 ft. E - - 'Elstead'. Striking dark stems make this a very distinct and desirable form 6ft. E - - 'White Pearl'. Smaller than the foregoing forms but very very floriferous. E - racemosa. Flowering early in the bugbane season this tall and statuesque plant has fresh green leaves and fine white flowering spires. 5ft. E - simplex atropurpurea Group. Forms with good shape and lovely bronze foliage, the flowers are pink tinged. 5ft. G - - 'Pritchard's Giant'. A very large plant in maturity. Green leaves and sturdy white spires . 6ft E
AJUGA. These creeping plants are most useful for covering pond edges thickly and quickly or underplanting in borders that do not dry out. There is a wonderful variety of leaf colour to choose from as well as a wide variety of flower colour. - alba. Green leaves are overtopped by little white spires in the spring. 6ins. C -'Rowden Appleblossom'. Clear appleblossom pink fls, distinct bright green leaves C -'Rowden Amethyst'. Large spires of deepest amethyst violet, dark purple almost black foliage, vigorous. D -'Rowden Royal Purple'. This brand new colour break was raised in our Nursery. Bronzed green leaves overtopped with good sized spires of a real royal purple colour. 8ins. D ARISARUM - proboscideum. (Mousetail Arum) Dense clumps of shiny triangular leaves hide chocolate brown spathes which have six inch long tails in May. A delight, especially for children of any age who enjoy looking for the "mice". Likes slightly moist half shade. 10 ins. E ARISAEMA - candidissimum. A most decorative arum with a pink white and green striped spathe followed by huge lobed leaves. Does well in not too dry woodland conditions. 2ft. K - consanguineum. Superbly elegant arum. Green spathe with a long brown tail followed in Autumn by striking scarlet berries. Large divided leaves of great stature. 3ft. H ARUNCUS. Essential and handsome plants best in damp semi-shaded woodland but will grow well in almost any conditions - dioicus. (Goatsbeard). Elegant ferny leaves form a large long lasting hummock, surmounted in mid-summer by exciting and large white plumes. 6ft. F - - 'Glasnevin'. Smaller version of the above. 4ft. G - - 'Kneiffii'. Dainty and delightful miniature form with thinly divided, threadlike leaves. H - aethusifolius. Very tiny species, ideal in the damper parts of a rockery or beside the smallest pool. Enchanting with the smallest Astilbes. 8 ins. E
ASTILBE. A deservedly popular group of brightly coloured damp lovers, tolerating virtually any soil that doesn't dry out or contain too much chalk. Enjoying sun or part shade they need no support , bloom over a long period, and their flower spikes remain attractive throughout the Winter. They are also magnificent as cut flowers. - chinensis pumila. First class ground cover for moist pond edges. Densely growing spikes of silvery mauve pink flowers in late Summer. 1 ½ ft. D - chinensis. The larger size of the species, covered with masses of ethereal flowers is a wonderful sight. 4ft. E - - taquettii superba. One of the finest plants for the damp garden. Bronzed leaves and stems carry large spikes of deep rosy mauve flowers usefully late in the season during early Autumn. 4 ½ ft. E - glaberrima saxatilis. Delightful miniature, foliage very finely cut,pale pink flowers. 7 ins. E - simplicifolia. An enchanting , very unusual little plant with undivided tripartite leaves and dainty white flowers. E ASTILBOIDES. - tabularis. One of the most architectural bog plants with imposing circular leaves and fluffy cream flowers somewhat reminiscent of an Astilbe. 4ft. F
CARDAMINE. A group of varied appearance but all like damp conditions and prefer a bit of shade, giving lovely displays from early Spring into Summer. - trifolia. Small clumps of dark green triangular leaves turn purple in Winter. Chalk white dainty sprays of flowers in early Spring . Ideal around the smaller pond. 10 ins. C - raphanifolia. A much larger plant than the foregoing in every way. Mid-green leaves make spreading mats in damp soil, light mauve flowers resembling Honesty profusely produced in Spring. 1 ½ ft. D
CHAEROPHYLLUM - hirsutum. A lover of damp semi-shade this much sought after relative of the Cow Parsley has no rival in early May. The clear green ferny foliage is superbly set off by plates of rosy pink flowers . 2 ½ ft E

CONVALLARIA (Lily of the Valley) - majalis. The well known garden plant with the glorious scent. White flowers. Spreading. 10 ins. C - - albo-striata. In this form the vertical veins of the leaf are picked out in white. Flower white. 10 ins J - - 'Flore-Pleno'. The rare double white flowered form. P - - 'Fortin's Giant'. A plant larger in all it's parts than the type. We believe that the variety called 'Berlin Giant' is the same plant as this. 1 ft. E - - 'Green Tapestry'. A unique variegated plant we obtained from France. The tall leaves are splashed and mottled with yellow,cream, and shades of green. White flowers. 10 ins. M - - 'Hardwick Hall' . In this lovely form the leaves are held upright to form a goblet shape, and each one is edged with a white or cream border. Flower white. 10 ins . M - - 'Prolificans'. Carries sprays of mainly double flowers. 10 ins. E - - rosea. We are lucky to have a very good form showing an excellent shade of pink flower. 8 ins. F - - 'Vic Pawlowski's Gold'. A spectacular variegated plant, the leaves being broadly striped with golden cream. This is a selected form of C.m albo-striata we think, that shows best in a sunny position.
