Iris Supplement Iris ensata Water Iris
IRIS - ensata. These glorious Japanese irises really should be more widely grown, as providing they are given a rich soil in sun, with plenty of moisture during the growing season, they will quickly form large free flowering clumps that can be left undisturbed for years. In limestone or chalky areas it will be necessary to dig out a large hole and fill it with acid soil (which can be contained in perforated plastic) or, as in Japan they can be grown in large pots and containers, as they do like a PH of below 6.5. Whilst we know some people plant them directly into ponds we do not recommend this, as they will almost certainly rot and die during a hard Winter. Their flowers are sumptuous in their colour texture and size.
For the past ten years we have been raising a number of home bred new varieties of these irises, a few of which we can now offer for sale, but in very small quantities. Here at the Nursery we have nearly a hundred others being trialled which can be seen in the Gardens during June and early July.
